With 38 novels in the series, this is a fantastic one to dive into if you’re looking for a new, gripping story that’ll last a while. Kellerman himself has said that the books do not need to be read in any particular order. However, just by reading some reviews, many readers claimed to have benefited from Alex’s character development by reading these novels in publication order.

A handful of his books have been written alongside his son, Jesse Kellerman, and others have had the helping hand of his wife, Faye Kellerman, another mystery writer. In addition to novels and non-fiction, Jonathan has written 2 short stories and has contributed to a variety of mystery profiles for a range of authors including Lee Child and John Connelly.

This article will be an ultimate guide to Jonathan Kellerman’s books, including the entirety of his Alex Delaware series, all of his fictional standalones, and his non-fiction publications.

About the Author

Jonathan Kellerman was born in 1949 in New York City and was raised on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. After a sudden move to California, Kellerman attended the University of California, Los Angeles, studying psychology, and worked as a journalist, cartoonist, and editor alongside his studies.

Kellerman received a Ph.D. in psychology and began working in child psychology almost immediately after. He did specialist research into child cancer patients and has significantly contributed to the field of behavioral medicine.

As part of his research, he has written a few non-fiction books, which are all standalones and do not have to be read in any particular order. As a cancer survivor himself, Jonathan’s cancer research was all the more personal. Alongside his work with child cancer patients, Jonathan also dug deep into the psychological effects of cancer treatment on patients of all ages and worked with directors in the Hematology Oncology department attempting to find a less psychologically damaging form of cancer treatment.

Due to Kellerman’s background in psychological research, all of his fictional novels have strong psychological undertones and the accuracy of the cases included makes the stories all the more interesting and compelling.

The Alex Delaware Series

This series is multi-dimensional. Although the Alex Delaware series is gripping and contains some excellently written, psychologically driven plot lines, much of the praise received by Kellerman for this series is down to the characterizations of his protagonists.

Alex Delaware is a complex and likable character who works with the Homicide division of the Los Angeles Police Department. He helps to analyze evidence and creates practical solutions for active cases, often alongside Milo Sturgis, a gay homicide detective who is one of the most adored characters in these books.

Kellerman has been thoroughly praised for creating a realistic gay character who helps to break the stigma and stereotyping around LGBTQ+ characters. Sturgis and Delaware work with each other in numerous different capacities and Delaware takes on a variety of different roles and duties throughout the series.

This series allowed Kellerman the public recognition he now has and these books are some of the best-selling novels in the psychological crime genre. If you’re new to Kellerman’s work, you’re in for a treat!
